Books Are My Bag

BOOKS ARE MY BAG                                             Last week, the Mainstreet Hare had a makeover...                                                                                                                                 The book selling world has gone ORANGE! Saturday the 14th of September saw the launch of a very exciting new campaign, kicking off with a Big Bookshop Party in celebration of bookshops everywhere! The first 50 people through our doors got a BOOKS ARE MY BAG tote bag and a free publishers proof, plus our team was of course on hand to offer advice and booky recommendations! There was a fair amount of cake involved too...

BOOKSARE MY BAG gallery - Clockwise L-R: Phillippa and our BAMB window, Scottish rugby legend Chris Patterson and Vivian's son Mully, MSP John Lamont shows his support, Vivian's frosted ginger cake, Super cool team of bikers en route to Lands End, A very orange table of goodies, lovely author Barbara Mellor, Bill's Late Summer Salad.
Starting as a collaboration between publishers, bookshops and authors and inspired by Lord Maurice Saatchi's Brutal Simplicity of Thought (which you can grab a copy of in our shop) BOOKS ARE MY BAG is the biggest ever campaign in celebration of the beloved bookshop

THE FACTS: (the good, the bad and the ugly)
  • 1/3 of the UK's book shops have closed in the past 10 years
  • 56% of all book buying decisions are made by consumers browsing in bookshops
  • 40% of books bought are purchased in the bricks and mortar bookshop
  • 88% of British book buyers are concerned that there are fewer bookshops on the high streets than five years ago
  • 77 % of book buyers think bookshops make high streets more appealing

THE GOOD NEWS:

  • ALL publishers and booksellers in the UK and Ireland have combined to halt this and celebrate and preserve our bookshops with the biggest booky campaign ever, BOOKS ARE MY BAG

The humble bookshop is nothing short of brilliant. Without the continued support of our loyal customers, Mainstreet wouldn't be here, and we wouldn't be able to continue discovering amazing new talent, rediscover the genius of old and share the joy of reading with all of you!
